Lyrics:

They are drowning
And I breathe
They are silent
And I speak
They have nothing
I have everything
They are starving
And I get to eat

And it’s 100 degrees
They’re outside in the heat
They’re outside in the storm
Depending on faith to keep them warm

I’ve been thinking about this
I’ve been asking God why
I get to breathe better air
But we all share the same sky

Why
Do I
Get to smile as they cry

Why
Do I
Live as they die

What did they do to deserve it
They are scarred
And I’m clean
They are blind
And I see
They can’t sleep
Yet I dream
They are fighting
And I’m free

And it’s 100 degrees
They’re outside in the heat
They’re outside in the storm
Depending on faith to keep them warm

I’ve heard that God doesn’t make mistakes
I’ve heard that God does no wrong
But they do not hear any music
But I get to write songs

Why
Do I
Get to smile as they cry

Why
Do I
Live as they die

What did they do to deserve it
What did they do to deserve it
What did I do to deserve this

Artist’s Statement: I recently returned from Israel after having my bat mitzvah. After visiting Yad Vashem, I was horrified to learn about the experiences of the kids during the Holocaust. “Live as They Die” is about how fortunate I am to have the things that I do, and it questions why I didn’t have to live through such a hard time.
