Artist’s Statement: For decades, the “Rocky Steps” of the Philadelphia Art Museum have served as a marker of the personal beginnings and endings in people’s lives. Some run up after the birth of a child. In the spring, busloads of giddy prom-goers arrive at the steps. Some climb it to propose marriage, while others climb to celebrate overcoming an illness. These recurring images of the steps represent how an ending can, in turn, be a beginning, and vice versa. This piece invites you to imagine what each person is climbing for: a beginning, an ending, or both.
