Parking Lot

Parking Lot by Riley Fisher - photo by Zoe Oppenheimer

the sky has turned to a dark blue
and the air around her is cool and thin
she wants to takes her time to enjoy the night

instead her knuckles turn white
she clutches her keys in one hand and covers her body with the other
she glances back obsessively
feeling a presence behind her

she sees him sneaking around the lot
behind corners and crevasses
she hears his feet and feels his breath

her feet move faster and faster,
her breath becomes heavier and heavier until she is sprinting
her eyes directed at one car
at the end of the parking lot
that feels miles away

the car sounds,
doors unlocking
she quickly slams it behind her
her breath catches and
she looks in the mirror

no one is there.
