Barred by Words

Barred by Words by Sonja Lippmann

Artist Statement: The idea for the design of this photograph came from the saying, “it’s written all over your face.” Teenage girls, especially, are often given unfair titles by their peers that aren’t easy to escape from. The words are arranged in straight lines overlaying the photo, reminiscent of bars confining the girl behind them. The contrast in color and words on each side of the photo represent how we let what other people say about us affect how we see ourselves. It shows how important it is to be positive because negatively labeling a person can take away their confidence to be their full, colorful, beautiful selves.
