Raising Jacob

Raising Jacob by Alexa Druyanoff

Artist’s Statement: The family portrait is of a mother, father, and son sitting on the grass for a picnic in Druya, a townlet in Belarus which my great-grandfather left in order to come to the United States. It memorializes a happy time for the family, innocent of the Holocaust. This piece was created using white oil paint and gel medium mixed with ash, painted on a tablecloth stretched over a wood panel. The ash preserves their memories, and also signifies their ultimate deaths in the Holocaust in ashes.
