My name is Alex Berman, and I was born and raised in Manhattan. I’m a member of the class of 2023 at the High School of American Studies at Lehman College in the Bronx, where I am on the track, cross country, and mock trial teams. When I’m not running in Van Cortlandt Park or practicing getting cross-examined, I love to write. I regularly participate in creative writing workshops and writers’ retreats through Writopia Lab, and also act as a teen intern, teaching young writers and hopefully nurturing in them the same love of writing I have. One of my personal goals for the coming year is to dedicate more time to the fantasy historical novel I am writing. My other hobbies include drawing and painting, reading anything I can get my hands on, and playing Dungeons and Dragons.
Visual Arts Portfolio
In addition to the images published on jGirls+ as stand-alone works or visuals accompanying articles by other contributors, the following is a curated selection of Alex’s works.
Alex Berman, is an artist from NYC. They’ve been drawing since they could hold a crayon! Alex attends the High School of American Studies, and has taken classes at the Art Students League of NY and Cleveland Institute of Art. Their art has been published online and in print, and recognized by Scholastic with a national gold medal. Alex also loves to write, and finds comics a perfect combination of my favorite mediums. Cartoonists Scott McCloud, Lynda Barry, Alison Bechdel, and N.D. Stevenson are constant inspirations, and have changed the way they think about art, language and their intersection. They like experimenting across mediums, but inevitably return to digital illustration and good old pen and paper. Art has the power to present a reality different from what we see, and Alex takes advantage of this by playing with distortion and surrealism.
