Questions are intended to inspire your creative thoughts, but should not limit you—you may respond to the theme as you wish. We also accept non-themed works at any time. Check our Submissions & Guidelines for ideas and more info.

Winter: In Flux

  • What’s an experience you’ve had that made you change your mind about something? Is there a political belief, a spiritual/religious belief, an understanding of how the world works, or an idea of what’s fair or just that has shifted for you?
  • How about a situation where you found room to believe in two seemingly opposed ideas at the same time?
  • Tell us about a time when you found a way to fruitfully engage with a person or an idea with which you fundamentally disagreed.

Deadline to submit: Wednesday, January 13, 2021

Late Winter: Lost History

  • What and who is absent from your school curriculum? Who has been forgotten (whether a whole group or a specific person)?
  • Who gets to decide how history gets written?
  • Do you have a story that you want to ensure gets passed on?

Deadline to submit: Wednesday, March 17, 2021

Spring: LGBTQIA+ and Jewish

  • Do your religious identity and sexual orientation or gender interact with one another? How does one affect the other?
  • How might you explore questions about your own queer identity through a fictional character?

Deadline to submit: Wednesday, May 19, 2021

*Note: jGirls does not publish during the months of July and August. Publication of themed pieces resumes in November.
